Monmouth Mayor's Report
September 7, 1999
Tonight's report will be relatively brief. I have a few things that I believe warrant mentioning but before I begin with my formal comments, I want to congratulate Councilor Scheirman on being a grand-dad - again.
Brendan Lane Schierman and family are home and doing well.
First, I want everyone to know what Emerson Nutter is doing for this community. I had the opportunity to stop by his home today and he shared with me the "street furniture" that he has almost completed for the skatepark - it's amazing.
Emerson Nutter, Carl Nightengale, the Park Board, the parents, the skaters - and everyone that has been involved thus far - have made a difference for this community. I'm told that a semi-firm date has been set for the pouring of the pad and that by this time next month the skaters will have a new park to enjoy.
I think we should also see that this effort is more than the construction of a recreation facility - it's an investment in our kids - and investment that they themselves have been a part of. In a very real way, this project is community at its best; I'm genuinely proud of what has been and what will be done.
Second, the 24 Hour Challenge Relay is almost here - this event is an important and meaningful opportunity for citizens to get to know neighbors. On top of that, it's fun that raises money for substance abuse; as they say in the movies... it just doesn't get any better than that!
For those that haven't been involved before, I encourage you to try it - at least come by and cheer the teams on. I'm looking forward to it and I hope that everyone that was involved last year is as well.
Third, The Legacy Project, an all-volunteer community-service tree planting project along 99W is still scheduled for October 9th from 0800 until 1200 (with lunch included for those that help out). Donations and volunteer signups are going well - but we still need more of both to make it happen.
This is going to be an exciting project to be a part of and I encourage everyone to lend a hand. For more information contact the project coordinator at 606-0246.
Finally, I want to apologize for last Wednesday morning. I was not at Rick's Place for Coffee & Community at 0800. I was on the other side of town fighting a house fire, I got to Rick's as soon as I could but that was around 1130.
For the folks that stopped by (and I'm told a few did), I'm sorry for not being there last week on time but I fully intend on being there tomorrow, bright and early.
[Tonight will be somewhat different than most meeting evenings - we will have our formal meeting and then a work session; both of these are open to the public even though the work session is semi-formal.]
