Evans has taken high road in race
Statesman Journal
September 26, 2006

A recent letter implied that Jackie Winters has been somehow smeared by Paul Evans in their campaign for senator.

I've never written a letter in support of a candidate before, but I attended a small gathering of neighbors and had an opportunity to listen to Paul. He was thoughtful, eloquent and, in particular, took the high road in his rare comments about Jackie.

His references to her seemed polite and respectful, but this is a campaign and there are differences between them.

Jackie's campaign is awash in money; Paul's is grassroots and door to door. He impressed me with his accessibility and his willingness to answer our questions specifically and not in generalities. He has a background in teaching and education; and as mayor of Monmouth, he was supported by and worked with members of both parties.

He has served our country and is, at this minute, heading back to Afghanistan and unable to continue this race as easily as his opponent. Paul impresses me as someone who is not an insider, not entrenched or beholden to anyone.

I think he can make a difference in Oregon politics, and, if given the chance, we would all be better for it.
