Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a triple amputee, will speak at a Thursday dessert reception for Oregon Senate candidate Paul Evans of Monmouth.

The reception will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom, 187 High St. NE in downtown Salem. The cost is $35 per person. For information, call Evans' campaign office at (503) 365-0695.

Cleland led the U.S. Veterans Administration, now a Cabinet-level department, from 1977 to 1981. He was in the Senate from 1997 to 2003. He will speak at a luncheon on Evans' behalf at the Benson Hotel in Portland before his stop in Salem.
