Chemeketa Courier: Paul Evans runs for House Seat 20

Paul Evans, a Chemeketa communications instructor, is running for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives.

Evans, a Democrat and decorated military veteran who teaches speech classes, announced his candidacy on Jan. 16 for Oregon’s House District 20, which straddles Marion and Polk counties and includes Salem.

The office has been held by Rep. Vicki Berger, R-West Salem, since 2003.

During an event in downtown Salem, Evans collected endorsements from various Oregon political leaders, including current representatives Brian Clem and Chris Edwards.

He also was endorsed by former Gov. Barbara Roberts.

“It’s rare that I give my endorsement to any candidate,” Roberts said. She described Evans as an exemplary leader in what she termed hands-on government.

Evans has been involved in Oregon politics since his election to the Monmouth City Council at age 18.

According to his website, he served for four years with the U.S. Air Force before returning to Oregon in 1997.

He was elected mayor of Monmouth in 1999.

Evans’ Oregon Air National Guard unit was recalled to active duty following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.

After again returning to Oregon, Evans taught at Western Oregon University and served on the advisory board for Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski.

He won the Democrat nomination for the District 20 seat in 2006 but lost the election.

Evans outlined several pieces of his political platform:

  • Support for an increase of minimum wage;
  • Movement toward a sustainable economy; and
  • Support of individual liberty and the fundamental right to privacy.

Evans called himself an advocate for “a future based in principles inherent to our values.”
He also indicated strong support for further development and expansion of community college program offerings. He called community college “the facilitators for the advancement of our economy.”
