The American Commission

"We, the People of the United States
in order to form a more perfect Union,
establish justice, insure domestic
tranquility, provide for the common
defense, promote the general welfare
and secure the blessings of liberty
to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain
and establish this Constitution
for the United States of America."
(Preamble, U.S. Constitution)

I believe the Preamble to the United States Constitution is more than an introductory paragraph. It is a concise description of our charge as citizens. And it is an eloquent explanation of a unique relationship between a government and the governed.
The preamble explains a uniquely American construct: the American Commission. It details the duties of service and grants a writ of authority - the powers necessary for securing an intergenerational promise.

As citizens, "We the People" are individually accountable for ensuring our rights, our privileges, and our freedoms are enjoyed by future generations, as well as our own. Voluntary acceptance of the rights of citizenship demands of us acceptance of the responsibilities of citizenship.

Our Union is citizen-dependent. Ultimately, America exists as a voluntary association of people working together for the common interest. Our government is a flexible but binding public relationship that will continue to exist only as long as "We the People" will it so.
